Montana DUI Laws May Toughen

A panel has sent a series of amendments to Montana’s DUI law that would be significantly more strict. The panel has stated that they are looking to crack down on drunk driving, which probably means trouble for innocent drivers in Kalispell.

According to this article in the Helena Independent Record, the proposals would increase the penalties for drunk driving, and make it easier for authorities to prosecute alleged drunk drivers.

The general sense is that this is the first of many proposals that will come before the state legislature this year in an attempt to “crack down” on drunk driving. With high profile accidents caused by alcohol and Montana routinely ranking among the states with the highest incidence of drunk driving, many lawmakers are using the issue as a chance to win support. Whether innocent driver’s rights will get trampled in the process remains to be seen.
